I have to admit that at first I wasn’t going to watch this show. It just didn’t really look like my thing. However, one night I had a late night meeting with a female companion and we watched a couple episodes. While the first couple episodes were blurry, I later finished the season at on my own and really enjoyed it.
First off, it makes you like Kelly Bundy (Christina Applegate) aka Jen from the get go. She just lost her husband. It’s funny when someone says “I can imagine what you’re going through” and the you sarcastically lay it out how it would be…you’re like oh shit, while laughing at the same time… then it kicks to beach and a song happy song. Such a great start to what I assumed was a dark show. From there she joins a support group for people who experienced loss. This is where she meets Judy (Linda Cardellini). While Kelly Bundy is sarcastic and funny and aggressive, Judy is soft spoken and affectionate…or so it seems…In any case, a friendship starts.
From there it’s a story of friendship and grief. Their friendship blossoms instantly. I really like these two together. They can both be powerful and vulnerable at the same time. They both can be serious and sarcastic at the same time. You see it right from the start that they have a good rap-or. Which sets up the show right from the start.
While there are many twist and storylines the one that kicks things off is the woman trying to find the person who hit Christina Applegate’s husband. From there it goes on a road I won’t discuss so I don’t spoil it. It’s a story of friendship, grief, lies, forgiveness, and family… there are a lot of good subtle jokes as well as ones right out in the open. Jen and Judy really crust it together. Almost a Thelma and Louise vibe except suburban. Both have craziness, sexiness, the comedy side, the sad side,, you name it and these two get it done. I didn’t blow me off the couch but I enjoyed it.
