Let me start this off by saying that one of the episodes this season was one of my favorites episodes of any show EVER…and I’ve watched A LOT of shows. I’ll get to that episode in a little but let me start by giving a quick rundown of the show for all the newbies. Bill Hader (Superbad, Hot Rod, Trainwreck) plays a an ex marine turned hitman who decides he wants to be an actor. The Fonz (Henry Winkler) plays his acting coach and the show is the struggle of old life and new life. Murderer or actor. You can see why it’s labeled a “dark comedy”
Now that you’re caught up on season 1 it’s time to talk about season 2. Right off the bat you remember why you liked the show. Barrys Ex Boss (Stephen Root) is using another guy and of course it goes horribly wrong.. then Barry is in “show must go on mood” while the rest of the class is mourning the fallout of his actions. Then we get to see a comedic side to a new drug connection when we’re reintroduced to NoHo Hank(Anthony Carrigan) the Chechen Mobster…Basically, 5 min in you’re already hooked into the new season..
The first thing I love about this show is the subtle humor. An agent being impressed with Henry Winklers pictures with celebrities that she appears insensitive towards his missing girlfriend. Even to the point the other agent has to let her know it’s time to leave. Accidentally giving your DNA on a soda can to the police. While this isn’t much to the normal viewer, its a small part that adds to my appreciation of the show. The second season tries to show Barry’s growth. Really, really tries… the problem is every character in the show is pushing him towards the “old Barry.” Even his “girlfriend” wants him to act angry. The main two characters that won’t let him move on are Fuches and NoHo Hank.
NoHo Hank is all over this season. He’s jealous, scared, emotional, serious and joking constantly… I would say he’s the second lead in the season even though most of his scenes are without Barry. Him and Berry’s friendship oddly grows past just work related. NoHo Hank is forcing it more than Barry but Barry has a soft spot for him. It’s an odd relationship but it’s the only one Barry has with that word outside of Fukes. While Barry still wants out he’s growing a pretty funny relationship with the mobster and his character adds a dark yet silly humor to the killing.
Barry’s relationship with Fukes is even dicier in the second season. Fukes is essentially the villain in this season. It definitely messes with Barry. Luckily for him he has his acting coach to talk to. The problem is this is the same acting coach that he mades girlfriend disappear. So he’s in a weird place with both his mentors. Outside of that you get to see the evolution of Barry. He’s funnier, more adjusted to being around people, He even does some accents. Another thing I like about this show is the dark jokes. Like asking “who died” when someone is missing. On the dark note, this season also addressed more of his war. This season also had a strong message about domestic abuse. Its a very intricate season….
But my favorite episode is the 5th one. This episode is so brilliantly written that it will win awards. Barry needs to kill someone and things just go wild. It hilarious, shocking, crazy, and amazing all at once. Season 2 Episode 5 is absolutely incredible. I won’t ruin it but I highly suggest watching it. I also suggest watching the entire show. If you like dark comedy, subtle jokes, and great writing you’ll love this show. I definitely recommend it.
